What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love writing, and I love organising things (I’m an avid list-maker) but by far, the best thing about my job is the people.
Throughout my career, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to work with some amazing people who have taught me, inspired me and challenged me. When I’m working with clients, I not only enjoy getting to learn and understand their business, but I also enjoy getting to know them as people.
I’ve been lucky enough to work for some clients for many years now, and they are not only my peers and my colleagues, but I’m proud to call them my friends.
What is your proudest career moment?
For me, there are two projects which stand out.
The first of which was establishing an awards ceremony which recognised the achievements of a specific profession. I was able to start up the scheme from scratch and develop a solid five-year plan to see it grow year-on-year. It’s always incredible to hear about how it’s continued to grow (long after I left that job role) and I’m proud to hear that it has achieved our original aim of becoming the leading celebration for that sector.
My second proudest moment is seeing the development of Social Work News magazine.
Since taking over the editorship, I’ve worked closely with the in-house design team to redevelop the publication, making it more accessible to social workers than ever before. Through a content and design refresh, the magazine is now reaching its highest ever readership and we’re continually receiving positive feedback from social workers who are keen to become involved.
Writing and editing the magazine is one of my favourite jobs. With so much emphasis upon digital marketing, it’s lovely to pick up a printed magazine and flick through from cover-to-cover.
If you have a corporate magazine that needs care and attention, why not look at our magazine production services?
What are your specialisms?
Marketing is a unique profession because you can use your skill set to generate successful projects for companies in any sector. I really enjoy the variety of work which comes through – there’s always a buzz when you start to learn about different sectors and different businesses.
My background is based around health and social care and this is where my sector knowledge comes into play. Because I understand the professions (social work is an area of interest), I know what terminology to use (and what to avoid). My understanding of social work also means that I can be hugely proactive when it comes to writing content for Social Work News magazine - not only can I establish the content ideas, but I know who the high-profile people are to approach for an interview. This style allows me to simply ‘get on’ with the task at hand, allowing the client to concentrate on other pressing matters.
Equally, my strength is in supporting Suffolk-based companies – throughout my career, I’ve worked alongside some of Suffolk’s biggest brand names. As someone who was born and raised in Ipswich, I understand our regional culture – it comes back to what I was saying about taking a flexible approach.
There are a lot of psychological facets to marketing; for instance, something which works well in Ipswich may not necessarily have the same impact in other parts of the county.
Having this unique understanding of the local area means that it’s easier to establish effective marketing and PR strategies tailored to your business.
What is your most inspirational quote?
“I have no idea what I’m doing. But I’m doing it really really well”
Andy Dwyer, Parks and Recreation
Yes, it’s a Parks and Recreation reference, but it rings true. At some point or another, we all have a crisis of confidence but it’s just about having the ability to push through it. This is true in so many different scenarios – plus, it’s just very funny!
